Looking to Make a Difference? Support SCARS

There is an organization in Athabasca working hard – behind the scenes – making a big difference in the community. Individuals and organizations have a chance to join as a sponsor, donor, or volunteer. If you have been looking for a way to give back and make a tangible difference, consider supporting Athabasca’s branch of the Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS-Athabasca).

Who is SCARS-Athabasca and What do They Do?

SCARS takes in pets that are unwanted or at risk of euthanasia. Preventing pet overpopulation is a significant part of SCARS' mission. The organization accommodates as many homeless pets as its resources permit. Each animal is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and provided with any necessary care. Additionally, pets are collected from remote area dog pounds and veterinary clinics acting as the pound. Stray and abandoned pets, many of which are sick or injured, are also taken in. Their Walls 4 Winter program provides insulated pet shelters for those participating in the Spay-Neuter-Return program.

Typically, over 400 animals are in their care, and they successfully find loving homes for over 2,000 animals every year. A SCARS pet will always be welcomed back into their care, no questions asked, if the owner can no longer keep it.

SCARS’ programs are offered at no cost and provide a very valuable service to the community. However, to ensure this service continues, donors, sponsors, and volunteers are needed.

Make A Difference in Your Life and in the Community

Getting involved is not only a rewarding experience, but it also positively impacts the lives of animals in dire need and contributes to the betterment of our community.

One significant way to support SCARS' mission is through the sponsorship program. By sponsoring areas of their Athabasca Second-Chance Country Refuge facility, you help provide necessary resources for animal care and rehabilitation. Sponsors are recognized with customized signs in the sponsored area, and their name or logo is featured on the SCARS website. This visibility attracts potential customers or supporters for businesses, while individuals enjoy the satisfaction of visibly supporting a worthy cause.

The different levels of sponsorship—platinum, gold, silver, and bronze—offer various benefits, allowing everyone an opportunity to contribute according to their capacity.

Becoming a member of SCARS is another way to get involved. Membership allows you to stay updated with their activities and support their mission.

Fostering is a direct and highly impactful way to help. As a foster, you provide a temporary home for animals in need, helping them recover and prepare for their forever homes. This can be a deeply rewarding experience, as you witness firsthand the transformation of the animals you care for.

Donating items from SCARS' wish list is another practical way to assist. SCARS has a list of items they need to take care of the animals—from food and cleaning supplies to toys and bedding.

Volunteering your time and skills is another invaluable contribution. SCARS relies on volunteers for a range of tasks, from animal care to administrative work.

If you have a business or service you'd like to promote, consider website advertising with SCARS. This not only supports SCARS' cause but also gives your business exposure to a large, engaged audience. SCARS’ website gets around 30,000 impressions each month.

Another unique way to contribute is by submitting your pet's photo for SCARS' calendar. If selected, your pet will be featured, and the proceeds from calendar sales go directly towards helping animals in need.

SCARS also runs a sanctuary program for animals that aren't suitable for adoption. Donating to this program ensures these animals receive the long-term care they need.

Every donation makes a difference. You can donate through their website to help SCARS continue their rescue and rehabilitation efforts.
