Calling all singers, dancers and performers — the Westlock and District Drama Society is hosting its fourth annual Talent Show Aug. 18 to showcase the area's artistic abilities.

With no cost to participate and no age limit to enter, performers will show their talent from 1-4 p.m at the Ag Grounds.

"Interest has been fantastic. We're always getting new people out to perform," said society president Matt Jemmett. "We've had people come out and show dog tricks. We've had three-piece bands. We've had standup comedy. It's pretty much a showcase of what kind of talents the people of Westlock have."

While there is still time to enter, several familiar local names are already signed up to perform. Gospel rapper Aristole Halfe will preach his poetry to inspire the faithful, while 14-year-old singer/songwriter Cory Nestorovich, who recently performed with Ghostboy during Canada Day celebrations, will play some licks on his guitar.

Twelve-year-old Shayla Schmolinski will dazzle the crowd with her vocal skills and Sarah Redding will close the show with her rock and pop vocals.

Jemmett said the show was both an opportunity for local talent to show people what they can do and also a means for the Drama Society to advertise for its upcoming fall season.

This year, they're hoping to run two plays instead of the usual one and will be moving their spring performance closer to the end of May so they aren't interfering with other groups who need the C.A.T.S. theatre such as the various dance groups and school bands. A second play is also being planned for October 2019.

"We're hoping to do two productions, which hasn't been done in quite some time," said Jemmett. "With the last couple years of productions drumming up interest, people want to see more happen for the arts community in Westlock and the surrounding area."

Jemmett said the society was hoping to perform the Melville Boys by Norm Foster for their spring production and is still deciding on their fall production. He invited anyone interested in participating in the productions, either as a performer, technician or costume and stage designer to contact him and join a script reading to help decide on the plays.

While space at the talent show is limited, there is still room on stage for eager performers. Anyone interested in performing should contact Jemmett at [email protected] or contact sound manager Benita Pedersen at (780) 349-0181.

The stage will be set up between the Old Timer's Cabin and the concession stand this year. Follow your ears.
