You’re allowed to use your backyard fire pit again, under certain conditions, in both the Town of Westlock and Westlock County after both municipalities downgraded last month’s fire bans to fire advisories.
Both municipalities issued the advisories June 1 following two days of rainy conditions in the region.
Backyard fire pits must be compliant with the town’s fire prevention bylaw and you must have a fire pit permit, reads the notice from the town.
Also allowed under the fire advisory for the town are household fireplaces, solid fuel barbecues and portable propane fire pits and appliances. Fires within approved facilities and appliances within designated camping and recreation areas are also allowed.
The county is issuing three-day essential burn permits for field preparation and yard clean up, but the fire guardian has the authority to refuse any permits for large brush piles at this time.
Fire permits are required for all open fires within the county, including fireworks.
The county reminds residents that any fire hazard, or unpermitted fireworks or exploding target is subject to fines under the county’s fire bylaw.
Fires in municipal campgrounds are allowed provided they are within designated fire rings. Backyard pits are also allowed, but must be three metres from any building, property line, or combustible material. It must also have a mesh screen, with openings no larger than 12.5 mm, made with expandable material.
Engineered incinerators are permitted as well and so are burn barrels, outside the hamlets.
No person is allowed to burn prohibited materials inside a burn barrel.
Both municipalities urge caution when using any outdoor fire, especially in windy, dry conditions. All fires must be supervised. You should also have water and extinguishing equipment nearby to douse the fire when finished using and to make sure it is out completely. Soak it, stir it and soak it again.
