Things are looking up for the Westlock Thunderbirds.

After two registration nights April 9 in Westlock and April 11 in Barrhead, numbers are definitely looking better with high school and bantam-aged players coming out to put their names forward for the regional grid-iron team.

Team manager and volunteer coordinator Sherri Martinuk said she was pleased with the results and will once again be looking to register even more players at the CATS Theatre April 17 from 4-5:30 p.m.

“We now have a full high school team and our bantam registration went really well in both Westlock and Barrhead.

“It was definitely much better than I thought,” she said, adding 24 players have signed up and that’s what you need for a full team.”

Coach Jon Kramer also said he knows of a few high school kids who are still on the fence about joining.

Kramer said he was also glad to see many registration forms go home with Grade 9 students who attended an orientation night at R.F. Staples School last week.

Martinuk added the team is also offering a deal for players who bring a friend to the field for spring training. If the friend sticks around for fall registration, they’ll get $25 off the fee.

If you can’t make out to register, Martinuk said she is also available by phone to take registrations. She can be reached at 780-803-0465.

“We’re optimistic and looking forward to our season,” she said.
