Westlock schools will be sending six high school track stars to provincials in Calgary next week after they came in at the top of their class at zones May 21 in Edmonton.

R.F. Staples Secondary School will send four students and St. Mary School will send two to the Alberta Schools Athletic Association Track and Field Championships June 7-8 in Calgary.

The North Central ASAA Zone Meet took place May 21 at Foote Field in Edmonton and saw R.F Staples’ Jessica Woynorowski place first in junior discus, second in shot put and fourth in the girls relay to earn her spot at the upcoming track meet.

Hailey Verbeek was first in the junior girls shot put while Jasmine Verbeek placed second in the junior girls discus.

Michael Davie also won second place in the seniors boys hurdles and placed third in the boys relay to earn his way to provincials.

The R.F. Staples team placed third overall out of 24 teams. The school also placed first overall in the junior girls division.

“The kids did fantastic and it was a really great day for the athletes,” said R.F. Staples coach Jessica Stevens.

St. Mary will be sending Jaiden Romanuik, who placed first in both the 1,500 and 3,000 metre races and Marissa Woodcock, who placed first in the junior girls 3,000 metre and third in the 1,500 metre race.

Athletes had to place first or second to move onto the provincial meet in Calgary.

Other R.F. Staples students who took part in zones but will not be going to provincials include Rees Victoor, who placed first in the triple-jump and third in the 800-metre race, and Jayce Tomlinson, who got third in the senior boys shot put, fourth in javelin, fifth in discus and third in the relay race.
