St. Mary School’s senior boys and girls volleyball team failed to advance past the round robin of the North Central 1A Zone championships played Nov. 16-17 at the Rotary Spirit Centre.

In the end, Covenant Christian Reform School won the boys banner, while Boyle School claimed the girls title.

“It was kind of a microcosm of our season, we just couldn’t find that consistency that we needed,” said boys coach Vance Nakonechny.

“We had some great points today, but we had a lot of moments where we weren’t able to have a sustained run.

“Not to take anything away from the other teams, but volleyball is a game where the team that makes the least amount of mistakes wins and a lot of our mistakes were self induced.”

Though the finish was tough, Nakonechny said the Sharks accomplished a lot over the season.

He added the hardest part of going down in the round robin was for his three graduating players.

“It’s always tough for the Grade 12s,” he said. “They did the best they could and are a great group of kids to work with.”

Girls battle hard

Meanwhile, the senior girls were eliminated after losing three straight in the round robin.

Girls head coach Ty Snell said they knew it was going to be an uphill battle.

“We were one of the lower ranked teams going in,” he said.

“We had some really close games, but it was a tough weekend for sure.”

Snell noted he also has three girls graduating, so he expected the returning players to be ready to play next fall.

As well, both coaches praised their players for their strong sportsmanship and willingness to jump in and help out with scorekeeping, clean up and other duties as needed.
