More than 100 hunters gathered at the Westlock Memorial Hall Saturday, Jan. 30 for the eighth-annual Busby Fish and Game Association's Antler Scoring and Trade Show.

Club membership chair Brian Yagos said he was pleased with the turnout. Officials took in over 50 sets of antlers and recorded seven Boone and Crockett record book entries.

'It was a very unusual year," Yagos said.

'We usually get two or three, but this year's scores were surprisingly high."

Michael Dubois ended up bringing home the men's typical whitetail with a score of 177, but a non-typical took home the day's overall high score for whitetail with Richard Edwards' score of 206.

Bonnie Huff took the ladies whitetail with a 161. Taylor Schneider scored 166 in the youth whitetail category and, rounding out the deer, Lance Hayman took down a 177-point monster in the mule deer category.

Stanley Vierson scored 163 in the moose category and Derick Tulloch brought home the elk trophy with a 178.

Richards chalked his win in the non-typical whitetail category up to luck.

'Luck ... we were out hunting and there he was," Richards said.

'Probably 90 yards and took him right in the boilermaker. Found him under a willow clump and when I first walked up to him thought it was stump. Turned out there was more antler than willow."

Although 15 points short of taking home the big prize, Stephen Loitz's 191 point non-typical whitetail was still enough to land him a place in the Boone and Crockett record book.

'I had it on a trail camera, so I knew it was there. I was sitting in my truck just on the edge of a field when he came," said Loitz , who shot the deer near Barrhead. 'He came up behind me and I saw him coming, so I got ready - right in the front shoulder. He fell right there."

Boone and Crockett official measurer Bob Daudelin explained the measurement process as he scored the tape-covered rack.

'This would be categorized as a non-typical whitetail, meaning whitetail that has exceptional antler growth beyond the typical norm."

Money from the event will help to fund the association's trout pond a mile west of Busby and send kids to the Narrow Lake Conservation Camp, which runs throughout July.

'We send them up there and they learn gun safety, take a hunting training course and get their boating licence," Yagos explained.

'They get to shoot archery and all calibre size guns and learn to survive out in the wilderness overnight. They've got to build their shelters and stuff."
