The Westlock Red Lions lost out in a defensive tilt on the road last week, dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker to the Stony Plain Mets.

The July 4 loss puts the club’s record at 9-6 and out of the fourth and final playoff spot in the North Central Alberta Baseball League (NCABL) standings and into fifth place behind the Edmonton Blackhawks who stand at 10-5.

“We played well, we just couldn’t score runs. We had them in trouble as we always had runners in scoring position, we just couldn’t seem to cash them in that night. We had some good at bats, we just couldn’t capitalize when we needed to,” said Red Lions manager Chris Brand. “Their pitcher threw really well too.”

Curtis Burlet threw a great game for the Lions as well, said Brand, giving up only the two runs and five hits through six innings of work.

Kris Johnson provided the Red Lions only offence in the game, hitting a big fly over the wall in the second inning. The long ball also hurt the Lions though as a Mets homer in the fifth put them ahead for good.

The Red Lions will visit the Sturgeon Paladins July 12 before returning home to Keller Field to face the St. Albert Cardinals July 16 and the Mets again on July 19.

The NCABL All Star game is also fast approaching, with the game scheduled for July 25 at Remax Field in Edmonton. This year’s game will see players from the Red Lions team up with players from the Sherwood Park Athletics, Edmonton Blackhawks and Edmonton Primeaus to face the best the Stony Plain Mets, St. Albert Cardinals, Edmonton Athletics and Sturgeon Paladins have to offer.

Players are expected to be named to the two all star teams later this week.
