It took a full period of overtime and a shootout, but the Westlock Pee Wee 1 Warriors made their way to the top of the Northern Alberta Interlock league last week, putting down Vegreville in two-straight games to claim the gold medal in the best-of-three series.

The two teams took to the ice at the Rotary Spirit Centre March 15, skating hard in a tilt that eventually saw the home team pull ahead and stay there, winning 6-3.

Steve Andrusiak and Tate Cuthbertson put points on the board before Vegreville was able to strike back in the second.

That was followed by a series of goals by the Warriors — Cole Fedorvich, Cuthbertson and Gavyn Berube each chipped in with more Warrior goals. Andrusiak added another before the end of the game to make the score 6-3.

The club’s fanbase, who came to the Spirit Centre prepared with signs and noisemakers, kept the arena rattling throughout the game.

The next day the Warriors travelled to Vegreville to win in dramatic fashion, playing to a 1-1 tie after regulation time and a five-minute overtime period. Isaac Edwards scored the lone Warriors goal in regulation.

In the shootout, Vegreville couldn’t put one past goalie Adam Drake and it came down to the Warriors’ last shooter, Cole Fedorvich, who netted one for the Warriors’ win and the gold medal.

The Warriors won’t have a lot of time to relish in their victory as they’re headed to the Pee Wee Tier 2 Provincial Championship March 28-31 in Edmonton.
