The Westlock Pee Wee girls Rock took their perfect 2-0 Greater Edmonton Lacrosse Council record into their April 28 game against the Sherwood Park Titans and played to a 1-1 draw.

After beating the Parkland Posse 5-0 on the road April 20, and the Beaumont Raiders at home 4-1 on April 22, the Rock welcomed the Titans to the Rotary Spirit Centre April 28 for a hard fought game by both teams.

Cadence Fedorvich scored the Rock’s lone goal of the game early in the first period with an assist from Carly Goller. Sherwood Park answered with a goal of its own shortly after that, and the score remained that way for the rest of the game, despite a number of good chances for both sides.

Stacy Howse, president of the Westlock Lacrosse Association said she was very impressed with the girls’ play.

“That’s a tough team that they played. They’re definitely a very good team; they were very good on the ball. It’s really tough to get around and we have a very young team,” she said.

“We’ve got a lot of new players and a lot of the girls only started playing last year as well, so I was very impressed with what I saw.”

The team consists of girls aged eight to 13 because a few rookies are playing down, while there is also a novice level player playing up one level.

“It’s not really about age,” said Howse. “It’s more about skill level.”

The team has been working really hard on their fundamentals like scooping, passing, catching and being in the right place, as teams at all levels do,” she said.

All the Westlock teams are doing very well in the early going of the season.

“This is our second weekend of play and the Rock is doing very well. We’re used to a lot of losses early in the season, then we build and then by the end of the season we get to playoffs, but we’re not starting out this year and I think that’s because we have kids who have started from the beginning and that flow is finally starting to come to fruition,” said Howse.

“What goes around is finally coming around.”
