The Westlock Midget ‘B’ Rock are headed to the playoffs despite being upended in their last league game of the Greater Edmonton Lacrosse Council season.

The club showed few signs of life in the first two periods June 23 at the Rotary Spirit Centre, allowing the Edmonton Warriors to go ahead 7-0 heading into the latter stages of the game. They managed to score two goals before the end of the game, but also allowed two more, making the final score 9-2.

Westlock goals were scored by Tyler Tymkow and Evan Brost.

“We knew it was going to be a tough battle,” said coach Brian Hegedus after the game.

“The teams are pretty even, it was just a bad day. The boys just need to learn how to push aside the negativity and keep pushing forward. They were good in the first two periods, but just kind of defeated themselves. As long as we keep having fun, that’s my goal.”

The midget boys finish the season with a 3-9-3 record, which is good enough for an eighth place playoff spot. They played their first playoff game June 25 against the St. Albert Rams in St. Albert.

“This is a learning year for everybody. Next year will be another year,” said Hegedus. “We’re having fun and we’ve got to know each other very well and we’re all having a blast together. I’ve learned a lot from them and I’m hoping they’ve learned a lot from me.”

Midget girls 1-1

The midget girls on the other hand, had a win and a loss last week, dropping a 5-4 decision to the Sherwood Park Titans in Edmonton June 19, but coming back to defeat the Edmonton Warriors June 23 at the Spirit Centre by a score of 9-2.

The girls wrap up their season with a 10-4-2 record and played their first playoff game June 25 in Beaumont.
