Matthew White is the new mayor of the Village of Clyde after he was the only councillor to let his name stand at municipality’s Oct. 15 organizational meeting.

White was nominated by outgoing mayor Nat Dvernichuk, who himself turned down a nomination. Christa Clausing remains as the village’s deputy mayor.

“It was a surprise, I wasn’t expecting Nat to nominate me, but I’m glad council has confidence in me,” he said.

“I’m quite excited. I’m looking forward to representing Clyde on a broader scale throughout the region.”

White said his top goals are getting regional collaboration done properly, noting that was the biggest challenge and opportunity facing the village.

Noting that collaboration talks were still in the early stages, White said he was still getting up to speed on identifying priority areas and is was preparing for discussions in the new  year.

“The biggest challenge is to make our services the best available to our residents, whether they’re in the town, county or village,” he said.

“So I’m excited to be able to help with that.

Elected to council in a 2016 byelection by acclamation, White has now sat on village council for two years. He was re-elected in the October 2017 municipal election with 82 votes — the highest all the candidates.
