Luke Chapman tries hard on Tuesdays

Summers are always fun as long as you know how to spend it. If you don't, then you think of ideas.

Coming up with new ideas can be difficult, but when Luke Chapman was at Tim Hortons, looking at the "50 Timbits" sign earlier this summer, he came up with a new idea on how he wanted to spend his time away from school.

Luke, 11, was inspired to give back to the community in small, simple ways. It was on a Tuesday that he bought 50 Timbits and gifted it to the office staff at the Ramada Hotel.

"I said to him 'You don't need 50 Timbits'. And he goes 'No but we can take them somewhere,'" said Luke's mother Christine Chapman.

"I was watching a video on YouTube called 'How to open a door.' One guy called it Warehouse Wednesday and I tried to come up with one for Tuesdays — Try Hard Tuesdays," he said, adding his favourite day of the week just happens to be Tuesday.

"Can you tell I really like Tuesdays?" he said with a laugh.

He quickly began planning on how he wanted to give back to the community every Tuesday.

"The first Tuesday I donated 50 Timbits to the Ramada people at the front desk. On the second Tuesday I donated some popcorn to the library, because they do movie days, and then yesterday I donated three boxes of ice cream to the day care," he said.

"My friend also inspired us," said Christine. "Her name is Brandy. She makes a big meal and donates it to a homeless shelter in Edmonton every Sunday. They give her all their food and she comes up with some kind of menu from what they give her and every Sunday she goes and gives them a meal."

Along with his mother, Luke has been making the rounds around town being nice, in the most basic sense of the word.

"I like it. I feel pretty amazing, because I feel like I brighten up someone's day," he said.

Luke also spends his free time practicing the piano, playing with Lego and collecting Pokémon cards and Hot Wheels.

With school looming on the horizon Luke said Try Hard Tuesdays would just be something he did over the summer vacation.

"I will definitely be doing this again," he said. "Everyone deserves to be happy, you know?"

Luke is also optimistic about doing Try Hard Tuesdays next summer.

"If we go on holiday I could do it on the road," he said, grinning widely. "It could be called Try Hard Tuesdays: On the Road."

His mother says she is very proud of him and the steps he is taking to become more involved in his community.

"I think it's wonderful. He's doing something positive and the response is positive," she said.

"Next week I'm going to give banana bread to the seniors," Luke said. "I don't have anything planned for the last Tuesday of the summer though."
