Seven R.F. Staples and St. Mary senior high students have qualified for the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association Track and Field Provincial Championships June 1-2 in Red Deer.
At the North Central Track and Field Zones May 22 in Edmonton, R.F. Staples School’s Max Benham won gold in the junior boys javelin, while Swedish-exchange student Moa Johansson claimed gold in the senior girls 800-metre run.
Kieran Michalczuk leapt to silver in the junior boys high jump, while Cache Schiller netted silver in the junior boys shot put. Destinee Miller scored a bronze in the intermediate girls shot put and will compete at provincials because one of the other medalists dropped out.
“We did quite well, we took eight athletes and five went on to provincials,” said R.F. Staples principal Wayne Rufiange.
Meanwhile, St. Mary’s Ashley Tymkow won gold in the senior girls 3,000-metre run and silver in the 1,500 metre, while Jaiden Romanuik took silver in the junior boys 1,500 metre and bronze in the 3,000-metre event.
“It felt pretty good to get the silver. I was behind the guy who placed third up to the last 20 metres and I just told myself to keep going and keep pushing,” said Romanuik. “I’m really excited to be going to provincials, especially because I just narrowly missed out on getting into the Top 2 in the 3,000 metre. This will be my first time in high school track provincials. It’ll be a lot of fun.”
