With the return of strongman competition King of the Creek, scavenger hunt, and bouncy castles on the horizon, residents of the Hamlet of Fawcett will have a plethora of celebration activities to choose from this July 1.

The Fawcett Agricultural Society is going all out for Canada’s 150th starting with a $2 pancake breakfast and silent auction at the Fawcett Hall at 8 a.m.

The scavenger hunt officially gets underway at 9 a.m. followed by the parade throughout the community at 11 a.m.

The parade will be flashier than previous years, with a larger prize pot and a special fly-over appearance of two CF-18 Hornets at 10:42 a.m.

Once the parade is complete, the King of the Creek competition will officially make its triumphant return.

Most of these events are taking place at the site of the old W.R. Frose School, which was demolished last year.

The competition has cash prizes in every category and features five events ranging from the caber toss — throwing a roughly trimmed tree trunk — to truck pulling.

The event currently has 11 competitors registered, but organizers say they and can handle up to 20.

It’s also the first time in almost a decade that a king will be crowned.

“We wanted to do something big for Canada’s 150th. We thought it was the right time to bring King of the Creek back,” said organizer Ross Smith.

Along with King of the Creek the hamlet is putting on a slo-pitch baseball tournament at the ball diamonds, a horseshoe tournament hosted by the Fawcett Senior’s Citizen’s Club, and the Shayne Hay Memorial Beach Volleyball Tournament.

They’re also serving a beef-on-the-bun lunch between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at the hall.

Other events include bouncy castles between 1 and 4 p.m. and kids create-a-sundae 3 p.m. at the hall.

The hamlet will then round out the day of activities with a $5 cabaret at the hall with local DJ Braden Conquergood.
