The Westlock Grey Lions managed to extend their winning streak to six last week before taking a loss that saw them fall to second place in the hunt for a playoff spot.

The Grey Lions are among three teams in the Alberta West Central Baseball Association that have played only 13 games this season, while others have played up to 17 at this point. They are tied for second in the league with a 10-3 record, behind the 10-7 Edmonton Heat, while The Fort Saskatchewan Red Sox and Sturgeon Paladins have 10-6 records.

They also have the best run differential in the league, scoring 136 runs and only giving up 77, for a 59 differential.

The team put their dominance on display for hometown fans at Keller Field July 23, as they routed the Sherwood Park Ducks 19-1 in five innings, with a first inning grand slam from Aaron Cotter, his second in as many weeks. There was no turning back from there.

“Our bats were alive that game and we put a pretty good beatdown on the Ducks. Aaron was on fire that game, our bats sure came alive,” said manager Sheldon McConaghy, adding that Rainie Gervais pitched well for all five innings.

A makeup game against the St. Albert Cardinals was cancelled July 25 due to rain, but the Grey Lions took to the road to visit the Sturgeon Paladins in Bon Accord July 26, taking a hard 7-2 loss against their playoff rival and falling in the standings to second place.

“They’re a really good hitting team and we couldn’t get the key hits when we needed them. We would load the bases, a couple times, and we were only able to get one run out of it,” said McConaghy. “They came out and were hitting the ball hard every inning, so credit to them for that, and they also had a guy on the mound that kept us off-balance just enough and they ended up taking the win.”

The Grey Lions will play July 30 in Fort Saskatchewan against the Red Sox and possibly another away game against the Red Sox Aug. 1 if the weather permits.

“We probably won’t get all our games in because of the rain, because after the long weekend they want to start the playoffs,” said McConaghy.
