Butz was one of 80 golfers to play the front nine of the course, while the back nine is expected to be open in a few days.

The front nine is open at the Westlock Golf Course with the hope that all 18 holes will be ready for play in as little as a few days.

The public was allowed to take to the course starting at 9 a.m. April 1, and about 80 players took advantage of the nice weather to hit the links, said club pro Kevin Lynes.

“People were itching to go,” he said.

Lynes said it’s still early to tell how the course wintered, but there is still a little bit of moisture on the back nine, especially at Hole 18.

“It appears to have wintered well. We just hope we don’t get any sleet or cold weather here that will contribute to disease. There’s a little bit of ice damage, but our greens held up really well,” he said.

“The majority of the water is gone and the creek is at a normal level.”

The club is currently taking league registrations for men, women and juniors, who will start swinging in May. The Spring Best Ball tournament will open the club event season May 25.

“We’re happy to be back going again and hopefully people are excited and we’ll see everybody out here,” said Lynes.
