The Westlock Golf Club crowned its 2018 club champions last weekend with Ryan Hoglander taking the men’s draw, Madison McVeety winning the women’s and Reid Casavant rising up to claim the junior title.

Sixty-three golfers, all club members, hit the links Sept. 8-9 and braved the less-than-desirable weather to take part in the 36-hole Club Championship.

“Numbers were a little down, but I think some were a little leery of the forecast,” said club pro Kevin Lynes after the tournament wrapped Sunday.

All three champions finished Day 1 ahead of the pack and each finished strong. Hoglander, who is also club president, shot a 73, one over par, on the first day and McVeety and Casavant both finished the first round with 78s.

“Madison, she played really well. She kind of blew away the rest of the field. There wasn’t anybody really close to her,” said Lynes, adding this is the second title for McVeety in two years.

Lynes also complimented junior champion Casavant on his game over the weekend. Hoglander also received high praise from the pro.

“Ryan Hoglander, a first-time champion, played very impressively day one in the rain with a one over par 73. He held up today and did what he had to do to win,” said Lynes.

“This tournament always has a great atmosphere. Everybody knows everybody, so it’s like a great big family playing out there.”

Next up for the club, as the season winds down, is the Men’s Scotch Two-Ball Sept. 15 and the two-day Cash Scramble on Sept. 29-30.

The club will also host a private tournament Sept. 22-23 for the Alexander First Nations Open, which will include up to 144 golfers each day.
