Always remember

You can’t even imagine the scene unless you’ve been there.

You can’t even imagine the scene unless you’ve been there.

Besides actual war-time footage, there are supposedly only a few movies that capture it well and that’s all generations will ever know of the essence of war, as the memories of those who experienced the worst of the worst of humanity are fading and flickering out daily. We’re talking grease and mud and dirt and blood war, analog war, with gears and steel and steam and the raw combined power of men on a mission and war machines on the field of battle together with the only purpose of killing the fascists on the other side.

The First World War was the highest level of the contempt bred by man until the Second World War 20 years later and the pure malignant nature of humans was put on display. We don’t have to get into details about the Holocaust, though we probably should.

Point is, it was in just those 20 years that it took Hitler to rise to the top of the German political class which gave him the ability to organize his followers, then his government and his army. Twenty years is not a long time. It can happen fast.

We all go out of our way to celebrate veterans and commemorate their service for the few weeks leading up to Nov. 11 every year and we all know it’s not enough, but we do what we can, we say.

How about we wear a poppy every day?

How about we support our Legions and ladies auxiliaries to the fullest extent possible?

How about we give those who have seen action in any theatre in the last 100 years, whatever they need to live happy, fulfilling lives after they’ve done their duty to their country?

They’re one of the few groups in society who truly deserve to be catered to. Whether it be affordable housing for all, excellent benefits packages, convenient office locations for them to conduct their affairs with the government, or medicine to treat their various afflictions. Make it worth their effort.

There are real-life fascists creeping into our politics, throughout the world. There are Holocaust deniers, white supremacists and xenophobes of all types, biding their time in the watery cracks of the sidewalks in your town and others. Don’t let them grab hold.

Make the sacrifice of our fallen soldiers and veterans who made it out alive worth something. Don’t forget the past ... ever.
