Municipal byelections are not always the most exciting part of our democracy, but they’re nonetheless an important part.

With the federal government having ended Community Access Program (CAP) funding effective March 31 this year, it will ultimately be the rural areas that feel the sting.

Winning the election will undoubtedly seem like the easy part, once newly elected MLA Maureen Kubinec heads to Edmonton to represent her riding in the Legislature.

Westlock County is a somewhat unique area, in the fact that it actually has so many rural schools in its hamlets. In many other rural areas in this province, similar small schools have already been closed.

You can read about it in the newspapers, hear it on the radio, see it on television and the Internet, but there’s really no substitute for getting information right from the horse’s mouth.
