The Westlock Pee Wee 'A' Krusaders will take their shot at a provincial title following a 4-1 win over the Wabamun Wildcats last Saturday.

Combined with the club's earlier 6-3 victory over Wabamun, the Krusaders will now head to the Provincial 'B' Championships, slated for March 25-28 in Fairview.

Krusaders coach Barry Brost said he was very proud of the way his team played against the Wildcats.

"It's a big win for the kids," he said. "Wabamun was a really good team. They threw a lot at us."

Saturday's game saw the Krusaders take the first goal of the game after a fairly dry first period. At 16:46, Ryan Archer scored with the help of Austin Watamaniuk and Daneel Lategan.

With 9:20 on the clock in the second, the Wildcats scored a goal to tie the game.

The Krusaders picked up the pace, and less than 40 seconds later Madison Vekved scored with Lategan's help.

Westlock's Lategan owned the third, scoring two goals. The first was assisted by Vekved and Watamaniuk, while the second was assisted by Vekved and Steven Mayowski.

"This series was a lot tighter than the scores let on," said Brost. "They were well-played and well-coached, the other team."

Brost said the team went to provincials two years ago with almost the same line up. He added that some also went last year, so this is the third time some players have been to provincials.

"We haven't won a medal yet," he said, noting that they finished third twice, but didn't get a medal. "We've got some kids this is they're very first trip, so it's special for them."

Over the next few weeks, Brost said the team will fine-tune their game.

"We really picked up on some key systems against these teams here (in provincials), so we're going to work on that," he said.

"Also, we've got to keep their emotions and their attitudes up as high as we can."

The Krusaders still have unfinished business in their league and faced-off versus Whitecourt in the Sturgeon Pembina Hockey League semifinals yesterday. The score was not available by publication deadline.

"It will be a very exciting series," said Brost. "They finished in second and we finished in third, so we've got our work cut out for us."

The Krusaders also have a tournament coming up this weekend from March 4-6 in St. Paul.
