Midget girls team claims Sturgeon Pembina League title with double OT win on Sunday in Edson

It took a double overtime for the Westlock female Midget 'B' Panthers to put the final nail in Edson's coffin with a 3-2 win, giving the Panthers the Sturgeon Pembina League title.

The Panthers played the second game in the best-of-three series against the Edson Subway Selects on Sunday in Edson.

"We were down 2-0, but the girls battled back and tied it up in the third," said head coach Bryan Carnegie after Sunday's game.

"We're happy today."

The Panthers had previously put the hurt on Edson on Saturday in Westlock, when they blew the Selects out of the water 5-1.

Assistant coach Terry Kloberdanz said the Panthers played together as a cohesive unit during Saturday's home game.

"As a coaching staff, we're pretty happy with (Saturday's) game," he said. "It was a strong team effort, right from the net out."

Co-captain Jenna Kloberdanz scored the game's first goal in the first, assisted by Taylor Properzi and Jamie Chomay.

During the second, Kloberdanz scored again, and Meaghan Dunford also managed to find the twine at 15:11.

Properzi managed to net a goal in the third on a solitary effort, while Stephanie Truckey scored not even a minute later off a deflection, assisted by Hailee Weir and Kloberdanz.

Kloberdanz noted that a couple third-period penalties for Westlock interrupted the flow of the game.

This allowed Edson to prevent a shutout with five minutes left on the clock - something that made the scoring player so happy she did an on-ice dance.

Kloberdanz said Edson is a good team and a goal-tending change meant that Westlock had to work a little harder to get goals.

"Goaltending was probably more of a factor today; their goaltender was a little stronger today," he said.

Jenna Kloberdanz said she thought they played really well as a team, and Edson put up a good fight.

"They always fight back," she said.

"They're different every game. We could win 15-0, or tie them. We have before, and they're kind of up and down like that."

The Selects came into the playoffs in second place, while Westlock was in first.

The Panthers - who were the Hockey Alberta Zone 3 champs - are also preparing to go to provincials from March 25-28 in Fort McMurray.

"That will be some good competition," coach Kloberdanz said.
