Fifteen thousand seven hundred and twenty dollars.
That's how much one purebred Black Angus heifer brought to W.R. Frose School's playground fund.
Last Saturday, at the Brandl Cattle Co.'s Bull Sale, the heifer was the prize for a draw and pulled in $14,420 in ticket sales. And, when donated back by Dave and Myrna van de Ligt, she became the subject of an auction that raised another $1,300.
Add that to the $750 from a trailer donated and auctioned off by Highway 44 Trailer Sales, and the fundraising association now has a whopping $16,470 sitting in its bank account.
Fern Doke, a parent and member of the association, said the money that came in was "overwhelming."
"I expected $5,000 would be a good fundraiser," she said. "This is incredible. I had no idea of the potential of a sale like that."
She said she was pleased with how the community got behind the event.
"We had $6,000 in tickets sold before we came here, just from the community members," she said.
Indeed, both the Fawcett and Flatbush Fire Departments donated $1,000 each, and in addition to donating the prize heifer, the Brandls purchased a huge number of tickets for the draw.
Byron Brandl, a parent of children at W.R. Frose and the man who ran the auction, said he donated the heifer last fall after hearing the school needed a new playground.
"We've been involved in other cattle organizations that have done similar things," he said. "We have three small children who are all going to attend that school. We firmly believe in our rural roots and community involvement."
Other members of the Brandl family played an instrumental role, said Brandl, noting the hard work and efforts of his wife, Gwen, and their children.
"Our little girl, Kailey, is in Grade 2, and she sat here and did her own bidding on behalf of her and her two brothers - Wynton and Landon," said Brandl.
"We felt it was something where we needed to try and help out," Brandl said. "We donated the heifer, but it's really all about having a venue to draw attention to the cause, and where other businesses and organizations could donate."
Doke said she thought the community support was great, and if other events turn out as well as this one, the playground will fixed in no time.
"This event was really good, and it will keep us on the right track to get a playground," Doke said.
