Worth keeping

Well, that was quite the party, wasn’t it?

The 103rd Westlock and District Agricultural Fair has rolled through town, bringing in a massive boost to our local economy and showcasing the finer points of our community.

Running entirely on the backs of volunteers, the fair is undoubtedly the community’s biggest event of the year.

However, over time it may be that some of us have come to forget just what it takes to put such a gathering on.

Countless hours go into planning, preparation and procuring the various events and shows that make the fair what it is. The demo derby, rodeo and chuckwagon races don’t just organize themselves.

The level of organization and commitment is made all the more impressive when you realize that most of the work is being done by people well into their retirement years.

You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. While the ag society and its volunteer base have worked their fingers to the bone to put this show on year after year, they themselves have admitted the tank is nearly out of gas.

Westlock-area residents are a tough lot, but without a new crop of volunteers, the community’s centerpiece may be at of risk of eroding away.

So our hats are off to you, the volunteers. In the face of overwhelming odds you have persevered year after year.

Your dedication and love of Westlock is why this tradition that started with your parents and grandparents lives on today.

Now everyone from Westlock and as far away as California can share this little piece of history with their children and grandchildren each and every year.

If you take in any part of the fair, be it the parade, rodeo, hall displays, petting zoo, beef show or the midway be sure to thank those who have given their time to make it happen.

And should you be feeling particularly grateful, why not offer to help out next year? Many hands make for light work.

The fair is a century-old tradition that is definitely worth keeping.
