The Town of Westlock and parts of Westlock County were slammed with torrential rains and flooding Monday night.

The Alberta Government issued an overland flood alert around 7 p.m. Aug. 22, and town officials asked residents to stay at home, if possible, until floodwaters abate.

Northwest neighbourhoods, including the town's industrial park were hit worst, said town Coun. David Truckey, with severe flooding also along the intersection of Highway 44 and Highway 18.

Environment Canada has advised that up to 70 millimetres of rain may fall by Tuesday morning.

Traffic was being tightly controlled north and southbound on Highway 44, with most residential roadways blocked to non-essential travel.

'The town is doing everything possible to control the situation," Truckey said.

'Water has breached in several areas. We're seeing water receding, though that water is pooling in lower areas, particularly in the downtown and northwest."

Westlock rural and town fire departments are asking anyone with basement flooding to contact emergency services.

The local Home Hardware has opened to give residents access to pumps and emergency gear.

Residents are also being asked to respect all roadblocks in the area.

Flooding has also been reported near Onoway and Buck Lake.

As of this morning much of the high water has gone down as the emergency alert issued for overland flooding was canceled just after 1 a.m. and the rainfall warning in place since yesterday afternoon was lifted. The Westlock Regional Landfill is closed today, Aug. 23 and tomorrow, Aug. 24, as officials deal with flooding at the site, town Coun. Curtis Snell reported just after 9:30 a.m. Aug. 23.
