Road crews finish up the last legs of the Southview area road, water and sewer system rehabilitation. The $5.1 million project is on track for com-pletion by the end of the month.

The $5.1 million Southview Rehabilitation project is still expected to wrap on time at the end of October.

“We’re cutting it close, but we’re still on schedule,” said Town of Westlock CAO Dean Krause.

“It’s been a long, tough road for the residents living in that area. They’ve had a summer of disruption, so we’re anxious to get it done for them.”

He noted the remaining work this month will focus on 101 and 102 Avenue.

As of Oct. 5, crews have started concrete work on curbs and sidewalks.

Paving and asphalt on 101 Avenue and 100 Street will start the week of Oct. 9. The final aspect of the project will line old clay-lined sewer pipes, beginning Oct. 17.

“In some areas, it was cracked and groundwater was seeping in,” Krause said of the old sewer system.

“In some areas, it was actually starting to collapse. In those areas, we actually dug up and replaced (it).”

In areas where the pipes were structurally fine, Krause said crews would line the old pipes, which involved putting in a new sewer line inside the old sewer system.

The project was a total rehabilitation of roads and sewers in the 50-year-old Southview neighbourhood, including waterlines, sewer system, roads, curbs, gutters and sidewalks on 101 and 102 avenues, and 97, 98 and 100 streets.

Crews arrived on site in May and will be back to finish a road overlay in 2017.
