After a hard-fought tournament, the Zone 5 lacrosse team walked away with the silver medal at the Alberta Summer Games thanks in part to a local trio.

Westlock’s Zach Basisty, Cole Perkins and Trace Stewart celebrated their silver finish in Leduc at the Alberta Summer Games July 14-17.

The Zone 5 team swept the round robin tournament with 3-0 record. In the finals they lost to 5-2 to Zone 3 Calgary team.

“They battled hard. It was a great gold medal game. Very exciting game,” said Zach’s dad Dan.

“It was a good competition and it was a good level of lacrosse. It challenged the boys.”

Cole, Trace and Zach, after qualifying for the Zone 5 team, were thrown into practice with their new teammates which left little time to prepare for the Games.

“I think we got two or three practices in,” Cole said.

The Zone 5 team didn’t let those obstacles stop them.

“We all bonded,” said Trace Stewart.

“We all became friends at the end.”

“I think everyone picked it up quite quickly,” Cole added.

The boys were pleased with their second-place finish, saying the game could have went either way.

“Coming out with a silver medal for the Alberta Summer Games was fantastic,” Dan said.

“We were evenly matched with the Calgary team. They got ahead by a couple of goals. We were trying to chase them the whole time and we couldn’t catch them,” Trace said.

Although none of the three will be able to compete in the Games again they are happy with the experience at this year’s tournament.

Dan described the tournament as a great way to meet other players and parents from around the province.

“It was a cool feeling that some of the best kids in Alberta for lacrosse were there,” Trace added.

“It was lots of fun. It was good experience,” Cole said.

The trio was also a part of the lacrosse team that won the provincial championships earlier this month.

With a provincial championship and a silver medal to their name, the boys are looking forward to another year of great lacrosse.

While Trace and Cole are moving up into the midget division, Zach has another year of bantam ahead of him.
