Santa Claus is coming to town, and he’s bringing some friends along for the annual Christmas Light-Up Nov. 18.

“We’re looking to kick off the Christmas season in a magical and wonderful way,” said organizer Benita Pedersen.

Festivities include a Christmas Market and Winter Wonderland Display at the Memorial Hall, which will feature a concession stand raising money for the St. Mary High School grad.

The market will be open from 12-9 p.m., while the Westlock Legion will also hosting a supper from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The Westlock Municipal Library will also be operating an arts-and-crafts station at Memorial Hall.

A special event is also being planned by the Westlock Community Art Club, called Eclectic Arts Adornments Uniquely Painted, from 12-4 p.m. at the Rotary Spirit Centre. The main event, however, will be the annual Christmas Parade, which will start at 5:30 p.m. on 107 St. and 100 Ave. and proceed to 104 St., after which point Santa will take his place on his throne to hear what is on the minds of children who want a photo with him.

“I encourage families, after watching the parade, to head off to the Memorial Hall at some point before 9 p.m. to get their children’s photo with Santa Claus,” said Pedersen. “We also have some other guests coming down from the north …for example, we have a life sized polar bear.”

Pedersen added that Santa would likely be bringing other guests as well, including a reindeer and a character with “really, really big feet.”

The parade starts at 5:30 p.m. and entries will be accepted right up until the floats start rolling.

“I’m expecting at least 20 entries this year, but I’d much rather have 30-50,” said Pedersen. “Last-minute parade entries are welcome. I’d prefer it if people pre-register, but if you show up at the last minute with a float, that’s fine by me.”

Residents not too eager to walk back and forth can catch a free hayride, which will be offered throughout the day.

“We’ll have a facilitator who will be running Christmas songs on the hay rides,” said Pedersen.

There will also be Christmas carolers walking the streets to help bring out the festive spirit.

Finally, the Westlock Gospel Chapel will be putting on a free street hockey jamboree from 6:15-8:45 p.m. for teenagers who aren’t as eager to see Santa but still want to participate in the holiday spirit.

Teenagers should pre-register by calling 780 349 6092.

Pedersen added she expected street vendors to join the party. If you want to find out more, you can check out the Westlock Christmas Light-up Facebook page.
