The Westlock Midget ‘B’ Rock was back with another take down at the Westlock Rotary Spirit Centre May 16.

The Rock scored a 13-4 victory over the Edmonton Warriors Midget B1, putting Westlock second in the Greater Edmonton Lacrosse Council (GELC) with a 5-0-0 record.

Head coach Shane Boulerice said the first period was a standout for his team.

“I thought the first period we played really well,” he said. “The boys brought their effort and ‘A’ game. The other team played really well too in the first period, but we had some chances. We made some good saves and that’s what kept it in the game for a little bit.”

The Rock knocked in two goals midway through the first, but the Warriors stayed close.

With five minutes left in the period, that kicked up a 60-second back-and-forth battle. The Rock had nailed in their third goal at 4:53 when the Warriors came around with their first point of the game at 4:39. Westlock made a quick turnaround 30 seconds later with their fourth goal of the period.

The Rock rolled on with their shooting streak, sniping in four more goals in the second period. With a growing lead, Boulerice said the boys lost their competitive mindset and started taking it easy as the Warriors struggled to keep up.

“I did see the stuff I wanted to see; in the second period I didn’t,” he said.

“I think the competition, we were up enough and the boys were getting it in their heads. In the third period we came back around and played a little better in the third and we had a better third.”

The Warriors did sneak in a second goal that period and two more in the third but were outnumbered. The Rock put five more balls in net for a 13-4 finish.

Boulerice said the team is striving to keep the mindset that they are there to play hard throughout the whole game, even if they outmatch the competition.

That means holding back their chirps and playing respectfully out on the court.

“They’re starting to learn not to do that part and just playing lacrosse instead of yapping and doing all that stuff,” he said.

“A little chirp goes on, but they’re getting better with it. They’re learning to respect the game and respect the other team.”
