Remembrance

As we continue down the pathway of inevitable holidays and celebrations one stands out — the one that allows us to enjoy all of the others. On Nov.

As we continue down the pathway of inevitable holidays and celebrations one stands out — the one that allows us to enjoy all of the others.

On Nov. 11 we pause to observe Remembrance Day when we take a moment to consider the tremendous and honourable sacrifice we have asked, and continue to ask, our service men and women.

They have defended our freedoms, they have upheld our ideals and they have protected all we hold dear.

It’s because of them we can give thanks to our loved ones. It’s because of them our children can run from house to house gleefully searching for candy on Halloween and it’s because of them those same children can enjoy the wonder and excitement of Christmas.

It is from our nation’s proud and glorious contribution to the defence of those things a century ago that we get the time and date for the celebration of such sacrifice.

But the armistice that ended the First World War, a war unlike this world had ever seen, is only one moment of this great nation’s proud military history.

From preserving the sanctity of this grand confederation before it was even a twinkle in the founding fathers eyes, to defending our way of life in the here and now, our military personal have always been there for us.

At the eleventh minute, on the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, we will remember them.

We will pay respect to those who have come before us and stand with those who stand proxy for all of us.

On the back of the results of the armistice on 11/11/1918 we asked the Greatest Generation to once again make the ultimate sacrifice.

And they did. Yet sadly, many of their experiences also being claimed by history.

And again, we are reminded why Remembrance Day and all it holds sacred are so important to the fabric of our society.

Whether you pause for a moment of private reflection or attend a public gathering, remember that Nov. 11 isn’t just another public holiday, it’s a celebration of our liberty.
