Jaden Senkoe will represent Westlock when he laces up at the 2016 Alberta Cup in Canmore next weekend.

Senkoe was one of 20 players named to the team that will represent the northwest area of the province at the annual hockey tourney which runs April 27 to May 1.

The 15-year-old, who currently plays at the Okanagan Hockey Academy in Penticton, B.C., said he was thrilled to learn about his selection.

“I was pretty excited … I don’t know how to explain it, I was really excited,” Senkoe said about receiving the call.

Senkoe attended an open tryout for team Alberta Northwest last month in Spruce Grove where he participated in one practice and three games.

The centreman is the lone participant from Westlock and is eager to represent his town at the provincial level.

“I like it because coming out of a small town, not too many kids get the opportunity to play on this team,” he said.

Senkoe’s coach in Penticton, Bruno Campese, said he was pleased to learn of the teen’s selection.

“I’m extremely happy for him. He’s a real smart, smooth player,” said Campese.

“Honestly, I think he’s gong to be an exceptional player as he moves along in his career. I was really happy for him that he made that team.”

Campese said that Senkoe’s composure and ability to step up in key situations will make him an asset to the team.

“One of his biggest attributes is his hockey sense and awareness. He’s a real cerebral-type player,” he said.

“He’s always dependable because he’s able to keep his emotions in check.”

Ultimately, Campese said the tournament will help Senkoe in his development.

“Whenever you can go to those types of camps and play with the best players in the region, and in this case, play against the best players in the province, it definitely helps out your game,” he said.
