Initiation hockey dominated the ice of the Westlock Rotary Spirit Centre on Saturday, Feb. 6 as teams competed in Westlock Minor Hockey Associations’ annual initiation tourney.

One-hundred-and-twenty-nine players from 10 different squads suited up, representing a modest increase over the nine teams that competed last year.

Teams played three games each in a new half-ice format, which was introduced by Hockey Alberta this year.

“This was our fist year doing half-ice, so there were four teams on the ice at one time,” said co-organizer Venessa Boulerice.

“It’s based on part of the initiation program that Hockey Alberta is trying to implement and recommend that initiation plays half-ice for better small-area skill development.”

Westlock Minor Hockey Association brought in new boards, which cut the ice surface into two mini-rinks and mini nets for the tournament, which garnered mixed reaction from parents.

“Some people like it, some people don’t because their other kids play full ice and it’s just something new and something different. We’re working our way forward, but this is the recommendation Hockey Alberta is making.

Ultimately, the scores of kids from around the region enjoyed themselves out on the ice.

“There were lots of smiling faces,” Boulerice said.

“The grandparents were all out there cheering them on and it’s cool. At this age it’s so fun for them to be part of it and wave to the crowds and see everyone here.”

While the kids weren’t on the ice, organizers made sure the kids were well occupied with other off-ice activities planned.

“There’s a movie going on in a room and it’s just a fun day, almost like a jamboree type thing,” she said. “We had lots of things going on.”

The three Westlock initiation clubs were also able to raise some funds through a raffle and a silent auction that will go back to them.

“It covers expenses, year end things for our participants.”

As for next year, Boulerice said it’s likely the half-ice tournament format will stick.

“It’s kind of a pilot year, but Hockey Alberta wanted us to do it, so we did it,” she said.
