Westlock’s Grey Lions are going right to the last pitch after losing Game 2 of their best-of-three series against the Edmonton Heat.

The squad lost 4-3 in the Alberta West Central Baseball Association (AWCBA) semi-final round Aug. 8 in Edmonton.

The Lions will play for keeps Aug. 15 at Keller Field.

“We faced their top pitcher,” said skipper Sheldon McConaghy.

“We battled hard against them and got a few runs, but they came back in the seventh inning to score two runs to win it.”

The schedule for the semifinal has been a bit haphazard because many of the Edmonton Heat — which draws its players from the Edmonton Fire Department — were away in California for the World

Firefighter Games last week.

Consequently, the Lions are chomping at the bit to get back to the field and move to the next round.

“They didn’t have enough players until Tuesday,” said McConaghy.

Awaiting the winner of Game 3 is the Spruce Grove Eagles, who upset the second place Edmonton Brewers earlier last week to advance to the final.

The Lions extinguished the Heat 8-0 in Game 1 of the series Aug. 2.

McConaghy noted that with the Lions placing first overall in the regular season, there was no reason to change any of the team’s systems at this stage in the game.

“We’re just going to carry on how we have through the whole season and put some bats together and hopefully come out on top,” he said.

The bats start swinging at 7 p.m.
