The Grey Lions are the kings of the Alberta West Central Baseball Association, laying claim to first in the league after sweeping a July 19 double header against the Spruce Grove Eagles at Keller Field.

“We stuck to our game until the bats came alive,” said manager Sheldon McConaghy.

Game 1 saw Carmen Brown dominate the mound throwing strike after strike in a 6-0 shutout

“It was a well-pitched game by Carmen, he didn’t give up a single run,” said McConaghy.

Game 2 was a little dicier for the Lions as the Eagles started with two runs in the first inning.

“We just had to keep the bats in check, and play a strong defensive game,” said McConaghy.

In that first inning the bats just wouldn’t sing and the Eagles started the second inning in the lead. A fly ball to the right field, an out at first, and a strike out was all the steam the Lions needed to build on.

The Lions danced with the bat and knocked in three runs to catch up and another three to go ahead for good.

The longest inning of the game saw the boys get back to playing strong ball as they cruised to a 10-3 win.

“We stuck to our game and pulled out a big win,” said McConaghy.

The Grey Lions continued to lead the league in wins on July 20 when they took down the Fort Saskatchewan Red Sox in a 8-4 away game, putting them at 12-2 — the closest team to them are the Brewers with a 10-3 mark.

The Edmonton Heat sit at 8-6, while the Spruce Grove Eagles have a 7-7 record.

The club’s next tilt is slated for July 24 when they travel to St. Albert to face the 4-7 Cardinals.
