An Edmonton woman is dead following a Tuesday-morning collision on Highway 44.

Morinville RCMP Cpl. B.D. Tarzwell said in a release that on Nov. 1, police responded at 9:45 a.m. to a call of a serious motor-vehicle collision 23 kilometres northwest of Morinville, near Alcomdale.

The female driver, and lone occupant of a southbound pickup truck, lost control and entered the northbound lane on Highway 44, where it was struck by a northbound pickup truck.

“The driver of the southbound truck succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Tarzwell said.

The northbound driver was transported by ambulance to an Edmonton-area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Sgt. Jack Poitras, strategic communications with the RCMP K Division, said the deceased is a 24-year-old woman from Edmonton, whose identity is not being released. The other driver is a 23-year-old Saskatchewan man.

Speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the crash. Road conditions at the time were slippery with icy sections, but Poitras said water or slushy conditions may also have been a factor — an RCMP collision analyst continues to investigate.

Highway 44 was closed for several hours, but reopened to traffic at 1 p.m later that day.
