County residents vote to sell Tawatinaw ski hill

Westlock County voters gave their resounding support to sell the Tawatinaw Valley ski hill.

Of the residents who cast a ballot in the Oct. 16 plebiscite, 1,028 people voted “yes” and 866 said “no” to getting rid of the hill.

Div. 5, which encompasses the ski hill in its boundaries, was the only ward where a majority supported keeping the hill with 136 “no” votes to 78 “yes.”

The plebiscite question asked: “Knowing the operating cost impact of the Tawatinaw Valley Ski Hill on the annual operating budget, are you in favour of selling the Tawatinaw Ski Hill Facility regardless of whether it remains a hill or is used for different purposes?”

Div. 7 had the most significant “yes” support with 133 votes to 57 “nos.”

Div. 4 had the most overall votes, with 194 people checking off “yes” to sell and 173 disagreeing with “no.”

The results for Div. 1 were 163 “yes” and 159 “no,” Div. 2 had 187 “yes” and 141 “no,” Div. 3 with 108 “yes” to a close 95 “no,” and Div. 6 drew 165 “yes” votes to 105 “no.”
