It was not a game for the feint of heart, but in the end it was the Westlock Bantam Warriors that emerged with a 9-8 win over the New Sarepta Eagles on Saturday, Nov. 28 at the Rotary Spirit Centre in Tier 3 1660 Bantam Hockey League play.

In search of their first win of the season, the last-place Eagles found the score sheet first taking a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.

Ryan Conquergood started the scoring for the Warriors to bring his team within one and the teams headed to the locker room with the Eagles up 2-1.

Coach Rocky Zeise said it took his team some time to get going.

“It was the first game we played since Oct. 31 … it started off slow and you could tell everyone was rusty,” Zeise said.

The second period saw its fair share of scoring as the Warriors put up four and New Sarepta added three of their own.

Addison Weir knotted the score at 2-2 just over 90 seconds in, but the Eagles reclaimed the lead 30 seconds later.

Weir added his second of the night at 14:12 to give the Warriors their first lead, but it was short-lived as the Eagles tied it 3-3 a minute later.

Conquergood added two more in the second to complete the hat trick — it was 5-5 after two.

Zeise said he was pleased to see his team back in the game after falling behind early.

“They didn’t give up, that’s fore sure,” he said. “There’s a lot of kids with big hears on our team.”

The back-and-forth action continued in the third. The Warriors grabbed the 6-5 lead early, but two quick Eagles goals gave the visitors a 7-6 lead.

An 8-8 game with just 3:16 left on the clock, Carsten Bergeron added his second to put his team up 9-8. It would remain the final score.

Zeise admitted it was a stressful game to watch from behind the bench.

“It was probably the highest scoring game I’ve been apart of in quite some time,” he said.

“It was nerve-racking. Of course you want your team to win, but as long as they’re playing together, that’s all that matters.”

The win improves the Warriors’ record to 2-1 on the season and puts them in sixth place of their nine-team division.
