Another super summer solstice

Though it was held not quite on the day of its namesake, the sun and the crowds came out to the Clyde Summer Solstice June 24.

Kids and adults lined the main streets of Clyde as the parade wrapped its way around the community.

The RCMP headed the parade followed by dozens of Silhouette Dance Studio dancers.

Sticking with the theme of “Surf’s Up,” a handful of floats decked their rides in palm trees, waves and a boat — the Clyde Fire Department quad hosed down a few parade goers for the real-life experience.

Afterwards the crowds made their way over to the Clyde Community Hall for the tradeshow or down to the Sports Grounds for some fun.

Westlock’s Michael Kwan has been coming for the last few years and this year he came with his children and sister.

“It’s just a great family event for the kids to come and see some stuff here,” he said. “Lots of different events for the kids to participate in.”

Auntie Lyvia Wong came to spend time with her niece and nephew — Teyla, 7, and Gavin, 6, who had their faces painted into a wolf and a fox.

“I think it’s great, the kids had a lot of fun in the bouncy balls and they got their face painted,” she said. “It’s a really good time. There’s sno-cones — it’s just like a little fair.”

Though the family missed out on the mutton bustin’ event, they did see the sheep that broke out of its pen and was on the lam.

Lamb wasn’t on the menu at the barbecue that afternoon but the Clyde fire department did cook up hot dogs and beef burgers.

While some kids got their hands dirty in the “Dig for Treasure” pile and chicken poop bingo, or let off steam with bumper balls, nine riders and their horses tested their speed, agility and skills at the gymkhana event on the other side of the grounds.

Rebecca Zudz sat in the stands to support her sister and friends competing in the event.

This was the second time Zudz came to watch her sister but has gone to the other attractions before.

“It is a fun event to go to,” she said. “The kids put a lot of dedication and time to play the sport and take time out of their day to ride and show off their horses and also to entertain people. It’s a fun day overall.”
