Ag fair love

It’s that time of year again.

It’s that time of year again.

While Westlock has had lots to celebrate this year, between the Canada 150 extravaganza, the Boston Pizza Cup and the 100th anniversary of Vimy, the 103rd annual Agriculture Fair is probably the biggest party of them all.

Nothing else brings the entire region together in quite the same way.

Oftentimes, major festivals in the area are split between locations, like what happened this past weekend with Jarvie Days and the Rochester Fair. But everyone comes to town for the Ag Fair.

It is the crowning event of the summer.

There really is something for everybody at the fair. Whether you are drawn to the chuckwagon races, the beef show or you prefer carnival rides. Perhaps you would rather just look at baby animals and arts and crafts — there’s an event for that too.

Proceeds from the Ag Fair go back to the Ag Society, meaning that attending the fair will help ensure further support for future fairs.

This year’s fair also has something special to offer fairgoers.

With over a century under its belt, the fair is overlapping with another major milestone this year: the North Central Alberta Baseball League, now in its 50th year of running bases, is continuing its tradition of hosting the semi-final at the fairgrounds.

Regardless of whether the Red Lions are able to attend the bout, the game should be an exciting denouement to a nailbiter of a season.

All this is provided for $10 a day.

It’s far too easy to take all the effort that goes into arranging this level of festivities for granted. Running almost completely on volunteer power, countless hours of work have gone into ensuring these three days run smoothly.

The volunteerism is driven by a deep love of all things Westlock. It would only be polite to drop by and take a gander at what our hard working Ag Society has been up to.

No matter what your preference, there is no reason for you to stay home this weekend. Come to the fair.
