Seventy-one-year-old man dies after getting thrown from ATV
A Westlock County man is dead after being thrown from an ATV as it was being towed behind a pickup truck last week.
A 71-year-old man succumbed to his injuries on the scene of the accident, despite the best efforts of civilians on scene who performed CPR until medical help arrived.
“It’s just a very tragic incident,” Westlock RCMP Cpl. Dave Casey said.
On July 24 at about 7:30 p.m., police and EMS were called to the scene at Range Road 241 and Township Road 594.
A police investigation revealed that the ATV was being towed by a pickup truck after it had broken down. Neither alcohol nor speed are believed to be factors.
“It wasn’t a high rate of speed or anything,” Casey said.
The man was thrown from the vehicle when the snow blade on the ATV came down and caught the ground. The victim was thrown from the ATV and struck the road surface.
No charges are pending and police are working with the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the specific cause of death.
The victim’s name has not been released, and Casey said it won’t be unless the family consents.
